Harold was born March 15, 1939, in Caldwell, a son of Harold and Elise Flagg Martin. At a young age he moved to Hermiston, Oregon. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958 and remained until his retirement in 1978. Harold enjoyed his career in the military. Upon completion of basic training at Fort Ord, California, he started a long term of overseas duties, starting in France, Taiwan, Sudan, Austria, Iran and a tour in Vietnam. Upon returning from Vietnam in 1973, he was assigned as the First Sergeant of the Armed Forces Induction Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and ended his 20-year service as the non-commission officer-in-charge of Fort Douglas, Utah, in 1978.

In 1960, Harold and Dolores (DeBruler) met and were married in Caldwell and she accompanied him throughout his military career and returned to Caldwell in 1978. Upon retirement in 1978, he worked as a salesman for Honstead Homes and Terry Jensen Homes until he started a second career with the Canyon County Assessor’s Office in 1982, where he worked as an appraiser and operations coordinator until his death.

Harold’s love for fishing led him to an active involvement with the Idaho States B.A.S.S. Federation and the Snake River Bassmasters, where he served as their secretary/treasurer for 10 years. In this capacity he excelled in their community fund-raisers and founded a Warmwater Fisheries Scholarship Endowment Fund with the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences at the University of Idaho. He was the director of Tri-State Bass, a local pro-bass tournament organization from 1994 to 1998. Harold was loved and respected by many, especially his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, sister, mother, stepmother and a step-sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Idaho Bass Federation Memorial Fund, University of Idaho, Moscow, ID 83844 or flowers may be sent.

Harold Martin was a founding member of Snake River Bassmasters and was a strong supporter of both our club and the Idaho State B.A.S.S. Federation. One of the reasons that our club is what it is today is Harold's guidance and influence during his 10 years as secretary / treasurer. It is only right and fitting that the Snake River Bassmasters have voted to rename their annual open tournament to the
"Snake River Bassmasters Harold Martin Memorial Classic".
