By Harold Martin, Chairman, Snake River Bassmasters

With all the new members of the Federation and to remind the old ones, I would like to give you some history and update on our Scholarship Endowment with the University of Idaho in Moscow.

Give the long-standing tradition of cold water fisheries in Idaho, there is a strong emphasis placed on salmoides in our universities and state Fish and Game department. Our goal is to help increase the awareness and emphasis on Idaho's warm water fishery. To help achieve that goal, The Idaho Bass Federation established a scholarship endowment for students studying warm water fisheries. It is our intent that an The Idaho Bass Federation Scholarship be awarded annually to at least one University of Idaho student studying in the field of warm water fisheries, a $500 scholarship.

These scholarships shall be available to juniors, seniors and graduate students who are enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program in the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Range Sciences and who are emphasizing warm water fisheries in their course of study. The recipient will have a minimum grade point average of 2.50 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduate students based on the University of Idaho 4.0 scale. Preference will be given to Idaho residents. In addition, preference will be given to those students who desire employment in Idaho after graduation. The recipient(s) shall be selected by the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources in accordance with established procedures.

The Snake River Bassmasters founded the fund on March 15, 1991. Monies were raised through individual donations, past member's memorials, raffles at the Snake River Bassmasters Classic, Snake River Fishing Expo and projects from other chapters within the federation. The fund started out slow, but in 1994, we lost two well-known members, Bob Medlin, our State Treasurer/Secretary and Ann Korte of the Snake River Lady Bass. Their families requested memorials be made to the endowment fund and that got things back on track and it started moving toward our goal.

The endowment was recognized by Ray Scott on his visit to Idaho in 1994. Bass National Headquarters gave us $1,000 and then on February 20, 1996 we met and exceeded our goal of $10,000; and a check in the amount of $10,200 was presented to Dr. Charles R. Hatch, Dean of University of Idaho at our 1996 Federation Banquet.

Since that date, the fund has awarded three annual $500 scholarships, and the principal market value as of July 1, 1998 was $15,678.31.

With all the new chapters and members in the Federation, lets continue to make this endowment grow and hopefully the annual scholarships can be increased to $1,000 each. I encourage individuals and chapters to send their tax-deductible contributions to:
